Program Awareness Survey:
Reflective Statement
Official Artifact Name: Research Design - Determining Community Awareness of Library Programs Offered in Service Center I Libraries in Kansas
Course for which the Artifact was Developed: LI 810 Research in Library and Information Science with Rajesh Singh
SLIM Program Outcome: PO6
SLIM Professional Values: PV2
This course introduces students to research methods and how they are applied in the field of library and information science. Analysis and evaluation of research lead to better and more critical use of research literature.
This was primarily a theory-based course. Theories of research methodology such as grounded theory, deductive and inductive theory, positivism, interpretivism, objectivism, and constructionism were discussed toward understanding what assumptions come into play when designing research.
This artifact is a group project resulting in a research design proposal. My group members were Jason Hibbs, Jessica Raburn, Emily Schwarze and Sara Worcester. We designed our research as a survey to retrieve information from communities about individual awareness of library programs in communities with Service Center I libraries. Such research could result in a better understanding of the effectiveness of library marketing efforts and possibly how they could be improved.
In developing this project, I took part in research for a literature review, research on survey methodologies and best practices, and critical thinking about research methodology to result in findings which were useful, timely, appropriate, ethical, and applicable to improving the field.
Developing the design of a research project is directly relevant to Program Outcome 6; Research. As part of a group, I assessed an information problem, identified an appropriate research method, and evaluated, critiqued and discussed research from the field with a bearing on our project. This project also is a good example of Professional Value 2, Leadership. As group facilitator, I demonstrated leadership potential and involved my group in creatively solving problems and addressing our issues from new perspectives.
