About this Capstone
This website exists as a portfolio demonstrating what I have learned through the Emporia State University (ESU) School of Library and Information Management (SLIM) Master of Library Science (MLS) with Archives Studies Concentration. It exists as a testament that my work exhibits the Program Outcomes and Professional Values.
About Shelby Schellenger
I came to library science through a love of books and information; my personal library numbers around 1500 volumes and I have additional collections of music, movies, older video games, and board and card games. I found librarianship a great fit with my personality and my professional capabilities and interests. For example, defending the rights of underprivileged groups and information rights and freedoms have always been important to me, as has helping people learn the information they need to know to solve problems. My academic background includes undergraduate work in Computer Science and a degree in Management with a focus on Entrepreneurship and Minors in Economics and Japanese. My professional background includes extensive customer service experience, as well as customer service management and retail management. I also shelved many books working at Kansas State University's Hale Library for a year while completing my undergraduate degree.
Ultimately I am interested in adding to the profession by bridging my business background and my MLS to be an effective administrator at a public or academic library. As a librarian starting out, any professional library position will give me experience valuable to being a better administrator and I am enthusiastic about joining the profession!
I am a fifth semester student expecting to graduate May 2013. I have been working as a Graduate Research Assistant for SLIM during both years of my program. Please see either Contact S. Schellenger (Email form) or About the Author (CV) for other contact options.

About SLIM
The Emporia State University School of Library and Information Management is the only accredited library school in Kansas. It is headquartered on the main ESU campus in the William Allen White Library building. One of the things I found interesting when deciding on what institution to pursue my degree with was that SLIM has outreach locations spread quite far from Kansas: Oregon, Utah, and Colorado. The blended nature of the program appealed to me as well, letting face-to-face interaction with my cohort form social and professional bonds which might have been difficult to form in a wholly online program. Since I have been working as Graduate Research Assistant with the program, I have had a better opportunity than many to meet with faculty and grow an appreciation for the academic pursuits of the field. This makes me all the more eager to get out there and experience more of the practice side of the profession.
