Entrepreneurship in Manhattan, Kansas:
Reflective Statement
Official Artifact Name: Information Literacy Online Pathfinder - Entrepreneurship in Manhattan, Kansas
Course for which the Artifact was Developed: LI 813 Reference and User Services with Cameron Tuai
SLIM Program Outcome: PO5
The purpose of this course was to familiarize the student with: print and electronic resources, current issues in reference and user services, how to select retrieval tools and resources, develop search strategies, evaluate search results, and how to evaluate sources.
Theories that were most prevalent in this course were related to reference interviews, learning styles, and organization of information. Dervin and Dewdney's Neutral Questioning figured heavily.
This artifact is a website which is a pathfinder to the subject of starting a small business in Manhattan, Kansas. Resources listed are available through the Manhattan Public Library, either directly through their collections, or indirectly through the use of their internet access.
In crafting this pathfinder I once again engaged in research and web design, but more importantly I located, evaluated, summarized, and organized resources from a limited sample toward a specific goal.
I feel there were many positive outcomes from this project. After doing the work for the assignment, I submitted the work to the Manhattan Public Library, which had an individual analyze my pathfinder and reformat some of its content (with attribution) and posted it to their website where it can serve a positive and direct reference service to library patrons. This project shows Program Outcome 5, through retrieving, evaluating, and synthesizing resources to fulfill a community need.
