Academic Library Technology Plan:
Reflective Statement
Official Artifact Name: Technology Plan Project - Coulbourne University Library, Three Year Technology Plan
Course for which the Artifact was Developed: LI 815 Information Technology for Library and Information Professionals with Kelly Fann
SLIM Program Outcome: PO8
The purpose of this course was to familiarize students with technology that is being used in libraries today and the social aspects of technology. Further, the course should help students learn to use technology to improve services to clients and develop strategies for keeping pace with changing technologies.
This was not a theory-heavy course. Touched upon, however, were ideas related to personal and social technology use. How and why technology is developed, used, and what differences or commonalities exist between different technologies.
This technology plan is the result of a group project with classmates Eric Coulbourne, Jayme Johnson, Amanda McCoy, and Sara Worcester. We developed a fictional case study academic library, developed its mission statement, developed a realistic recent institutional technology history, technology goals for the next three years, and how these goals were to be carried out.
In creating this artifact, I found out what is involved in the technology plan process, what realistic budgets and expectations are for a specific institution type, and what is involved in pursuing such a plan. Specifically, the content area I worked on was related to the implementation of an RFID system in our fictional mid-sized academic library. I contacted vendors, researched equipment, and discovered prices and procedures from similar transitioning libraries.
As a primary outcome from this project I selected Program Outcome 8: Administration and Management. As group facilitator, it fell to me to make sure that the pieces all came together. It was also particularly interesting to discover what was involved through collaboration, communication, and collegiality in making an effective and appropriate change in library services from manual circulation to an RFID system.
